Project

Lithuanian Roma platform – going local

IV Phase, 2020–2021 m.

In 2021–2022, the Department of National Minorities under the Government of the Republic of Lithuania continued the main activities of the project "Lithuanian Roma Platform – going local" that began in 2016. Roma platforms operated in Vilnius, Panevėžys, Kybartai, and Jonava. The mediators working there helped Roma people address important issues related to education, health, employment, and other matters.

During the project, events aimed at empowering Roma women were held. One such event was focused on the prevention of early marriages. Early marriages are still prevalent in the Roma community. Roma women who marry young often do not complete their education because they have to raise children, but later, these decisions become a serious obstacle to employment. Therefore, it is very important to encourage Roma girls to finish school and acquire a profession.

Since the beginning of the project, connections have been established with various municipalities where the Roma ethnic minority resides. During the fourth phase of the project, cooperation with local government representatives was further developed, and connections were established with Roma organizations in Latvia and Estonia.

A brochure titled "Lithuanian Roma" was also published, providing information about the social situation of Roma in society.

The total project value was 68,000 euros.

The project was implemented from August 2020 to August 2021.
