Project

Lithuanian Roma platform – going local

II Phase, 2017–2018 m.

To promote cooperation and mutual dialogue between Roma communities and local municipalities in addressing issues relevant to the Roma national minority, such as integration, social inclusion, education, healthcare, and other matters, the Department of National Minorities under the Government of the Republic of Lithuania continued the project "Lithuanian Roma Platform – going local" in 2017. The project was funded by the European Commission.

During the first year of project implementation, connections were established between Roma communities and municipalities. A tool was created to enable Roma, through intermediaries, to resolve emerging issues more quickly and effectively while allowing municipal employees to gain a better understanding of the Roma situation. Training sessions were organized for educators working with Roma children, equipping teachers with specific knowledge about the particularities of Roma children's education. Special attention was given to Roma women, encouraging them to take on leadership roles. The project was carried out in two main directions: informing and educating the public, as well as strengthening Roma skills and competencies.

During the project's implementation, trained coordinators were employed as intermediaries between the Roma community and municipalities. They worked in Vilnius, Panevėžys, Marijampolė, Kybartai, and Eišiškės, assisting Roma in communicating with state institution representatives, supporting them in handling affairs with both public and private institutions, and helping to resolve various everyday issues. They also carried out educational and prevention programs. Additionally, a seminar was organized for Roma women and girls, as well as events for Roma youth. Further training sessions were held for teachers working with Roma students. Meetings with Roma coordinators and consultations with municipal representatives also took place.

The total project budget amounted to €65,000.

The project was implemented from July 2017 to July 2018.
